Weight Loss FAQ
Personal Primary Care offers personalized weight loss and fat loss programs and diet plans for patients in Western MA, including Springfield MA, Longmeadow MA, and Chicopee MA, and Northern CT, including Enfield CT, Suffield CT, and Somers CT.
How much does the weight loss program cost?
The cost of our weight loss and fat loss programs vary depending upon your health and your health needs. We'll work through your insurance company, but there might be certain add-ons not covered by insurance.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Our patients can typically lose 10-50 pounds in 3-6 months, however, weight loss is extremely variable and will depend upon your body and health. Personal Primary Care's weight loss and fat loss programs are customized to each of our patients because we know that no two people are the same. Dr. Khan will guide you through your weight loss program to ensure that you're losing weight in a healthy way.
Once I lose weight, how do I keep it off?
Personal Primary care offers a checklist of lifestyle management and choices for you to make during and after you finish your weight loss program. The goal is for you not to gain weight back, and one option is that you can take certain medications to keep the weight off and prevent weight from coming back. You'll have to continue with your lifestyle management and healthy lifestyle choices after your weight loss.
What does the weight loss program include?
Personal Primary Care offers a physician-supervised weight loss program to ensure that you're losing weight in a healthy way and stay on your weight loss journey. The program includes a comprehensive exam and a review of your body composition and diagnostics using our Medical Body Composition Analysis scale and Boston Heart Diagnostics testing. Dr. Khan can prescribe and de-prescribe medication, because certain medications can cause you to actually gain weight while others can be used to help you lose weight. Personal Primary Care offers lifestyle coaching and management, encouraging you to get eight hours of sleep a night, eating locally-grown food, exercising regularly, and take your medication and vitamins.
When can I expect to see results?
Your weight loss results can vary, just as your weight loss, but once you've made lifestyle choices, you should begin to feel better with changes. These changes can be subtle or variable depending upon your body type. The goal isn't to lose weight quickly but be able to keep it off through making healthy lifestyle choices. Weight loss is a gradual process—you won't see instant changes overnight—so you have to continue with the program in order to see results.

What is a Body Composition Analyzer (mBCA) scale?
Personal Primary Care utilizes a Medical Body Composition Analysis (mBCA) scale that provides an in-depth reading of key components that affect your overall body weight. The non-invasive analysis only takes 17 seconds, and you'll receive an easy-to-read analysis that informs you of where your health stands. All you have to do is stand on the scale!
The mBCA scale measures your fat mass, total body water, visceral adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and more. These measurements will be incorporated into your personalized weight loss program. They can help us set and reach your weight loss goals because we have a base analysis of your weight, height, and overall health.
Do you offer medication for weight loss?
The field of medications to treat the chronic disease of obesity is exploding, and we have many new medications that can work along with lifestyle modifications to help with weight management and weight loss. These include Contrave, Qsymia, Phentermine, Metformin, Topamax, Belviq, Saxenda, and several new medications to manage type 2 diabetes.
Also you might be inadvertently on medications that cause weight gain or increase your risk of getting obese. We will work with you and your health care providers to identify these medications and replace them with weight neutral medications when and if appropriate.
Is it safe for me to participate in this program if I have diabetes?
Yes, weight loss has huge health benefits for diabetic patients. Some patients are even able to discontinue diabetes medication (ex. Insulin) through appropriate weight loss and exercise.
What aspects of my life do you look at for the weight loss program?
Personal Primary Care will look at your medical history and risks of any chronic diseases, what medication you're currently taking, how often you exercise, what your eating habits are, and any other factors you think would be relevant to your weight loss. It's important to look at the big picture and see what lifestyle changes can be made.
